Evidence & scope

Evidence-informed coaching with clear boundaries.

The aim is to make better coaching decisions without overstating what the evidence—or coaching itself—can establish.

What evidence-informed means

Strength, uncertainty and practical importance are kept visible.

KHC uses established health and behavior-change evidence where relevant, while recognizing that evidence varies in strength. We distinguish stronger evidence from preliminary findings, association from causation, and statistically significant findings from outcomes that are meaningfully important to a client.

KHC Evidence Policy

How evidence informs coaching decisions.

KHC prefers higher-quality evidence—such as systematic reviews, evidence-based guidelines and well-conducted controlled studies—where it is relevant and applicable.

  • Consider recency, applicability and consistency across the evidence.
  • Distinguish stronger evidence from preliminary findings.
  • Distinguish association from causation.
  • Distinguish statistical significance from meaningful practical or clinical importance.
  • State uncertainty when evidence is mixed, indirect or limited.
  • Give appropriate weight to guidance from qualified healthcare professionals for medical decisions.

Representative evidence sources

KHC does not treat any single guideline or study as proof that a particular intervention will produce a particular result for an individual client. The following are examples of the higher-level guidelines, consensus statements and evidence reviews that inform relevant areas of the KHC approach:

  • World Health Organization. WHO Guidelines on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour. 2020.
  • World Health Organization & Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. What Are Healthy Diets? 2024.
  • National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Behaviour Change: Individual Approaches (PH49). Includes goal setting, action planning, coping planning, feedback and self-monitoring.
  • U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Healthy Diet and Physical Activity for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Adults With Cardiovascular Risk Factors: Behavioral Counseling Interventions. 2020.
  • American Academy of Sleep Medicine & Sleep Research Society. Recommended Amount of Sleep for a Healthy Adult: A Joint Consensus Statement. 2015.
  • The Impact of Health and Wellness Coaching on Patient-Important Outcomes in Chronic Illness Care: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Patient Education and Counseling, 2023. This review reported improvements in some outcomes but judged the certainty of evidence for most outcomes low or very low, illustrating why KHC does not overstate coaching effects.

Evidence is evaluated in context. KHC distinguishes guidelines from individual studies, stronger evidence from preliminary findings, association from causation, and statistical significance from practical or clinical importance.

What KHC can do

Coach, organize, prioritize and support implementation.

  • Coach behavior change
  • Provide general health and nutrition education within competence
  • Help organize client-supplied information for coaching context
  • Help prioritize modifiable lifestyle targets
  • Support implementation of clinician recommendations
  • Track agreed behavioral and non-clinical progress measures
  • Help formulate questions to discuss with qualified professionals
  • Identify situations where appropriate professional input may be needed

What KHC does not do

Diagnose, prescribe or replace regulated care.

  • Diagnose disease
  • Prescribe or change medication
  • Order medical tests
  • Independently interpret a test as establishing a diagnosis
  • Provide emergency care
  • Promise disease reversal
  • Substitute for appropriate medical, mental-health, dietetic, rehabilitative or other regulated care

What “root cause” means at KHC

Structured exploration—not a claim to diagnose medical causation.

A systematic, non-diagnostic approach for persistent or multifactorial concerns. We look beyond the visible problem to identify modifiable lifestyle, behavioral, stress, recovery, emotional, social and environmental factors that may be contributing to it or keeping it going — then prioritize changes, measure the response and adapt.

Rather than assuming there is one hidden cause, we develop and test plausible working hypotheses while keeping medical diagnosis and treatment with appropriately qualified healthcare professionals.

Measurement

Change can inform a decision without proving causation.

KHC may organize and compare client-reported, physical or functional, wearable, or clinician-supplied information for coaching context. KHC does not independently provide medical interpretation. Observed change over time does not by itself prove that coaching or a particular behavior caused that change.

Urgent issues

Healthcare first.

New, severe, worsening or urgent health concerns should be addressed through appropriate healthcare or emergency services rather than waiting for a coaching appointment or using this website.
